Robert Song's Running

I'm over 50 and been running off and on since 1968. I have run everything from 800m to 10k on the track, to half marathons (PB 1:21 Brisbane 1993) and marathons (PB 2:53 Gold Coast 1985).

At last I am starting to feel like things are getting back on track with pleasing runs on Friday and Sunday. But still along way to go. Has been a cooler this week and somedays the wind has been quite stiff along the river going into towards town.

Have to decide on how I can extend the 13k as it seems the section of the boardwalk that is currently closed will have to be rebuilt and it is not expected to reopen for two years.

Formal Time

I have continued to plug away this week at getting my fitness back. It has certainly suprised me how much the bout of flu actually took out of me. The HR is still to high for the pace of the runs. One thing that hasn't helped this week is the return of humid conditions. It only seems like yesterday that conditions were ideal for running. Even at these slow paces I am finishing drenched.

Tue 13k 1:07:53 (HR 131 Pace 5:13)

Wed 13k 1:06:05 (HR 138 Pace 5:05)

Thu 13k 1:04:42 (HR 139 Pace 5:01)

Fri - Busy

Sat - Rest

Sun 25k 2:15:20 (HR 142 Pace 5:24)

Week Total 73.5k

I didn't run Friday as it was my eldest daughter's Grade 12 school formal and I had to be there for the pre-formal send off. After that we had to rush to Suncorp to see the Roar game (yet another home loss). Bronco's supporters may be gutted by the last seconds loss on Saturday night but only Roar fans know dissappointment on a year in year out basis.

Here is a formal picture of Ducky. Today she went for her driving test and passed.

10 9 8 but not at 7 6 5

I just couldn't let the 10th of September 2008 go by without a post. Pity I wasn't out of bed at 6 minutes and 5 seconds past 7 this morning.
Tonight I ran to the point where the boardwalk is closed. I measured it as just slightly under 13k which I did in 64:48 (HR 142 4:59 pace). So it cuts about 1.5k off the legth of the normal run. Will have to find another 2k somewhere to make it a nice even 15k in the future.

I have been posting infrequently lately for many reasons. One of which is, I have been having too much fun making alternating music mixes with Johnny Dark. It goes like this. He sends me a song. I listen. Become inspired. Select a song and send it back to him. He does the same at his end. This continues until we reach the 80 minute CD length. Sometimes inspiration is instant but on other occasions I spend many hours trawling through my album collection looking for that perfect selection.

We are just about to finish our third.

If you are interested the first two can be downloaded .

Rescue Me

Maybe this is the answer to not having to have that annoying toilet stop in your next marathon.

"Back On The Road Again" Again

On my last post (many many moons ago) I had just started running again after the dreaded cold and cough lurgy that everyone seems to have got as well.

My running only lasted about a week and I just still didn't feel right, so decided to give my self some more time off just to make sure I was fully over it.

So now I have just completed my second week back again. Even in the first week, I was still up and down with some soaring HRs at slow pace on some runs.

This week has been better and I managed 72.5k but I have certainly lost some fitness since the Gold Coast. I had wanted to race a 10k in October and get under 40 minutes but that doesn't look possible right now. So I plan to just do a month of base building low HR runs and re-assess my goals in early October.

When I came back to work at the end of May, I had a dilemma that I wrestled with for about a month. Because of the completion of some new river-side apartments, the Path by the river along the Teneriffe section was now joined with a section further along. In the picture below you can see where the path used to to turn back up on to the road but now you can continue on.

Should I use this new path or stick to my old course, so runs could be accurately compared with past runs? I finally made the plunge and took the new route. It is about 20 meters shorter over all but I can live with that. And then last week, they closed the path just past the Storey Bridge, so it is no longer possible to do my 14.5k round trip to Riverside or the 19k loop to the Goodwill Bridge. Doh!
