Robert Song's Running

I'm over 50 and been running off and on since 1968. I have run everything from 800m to 10k on the track, to half marathons (PB 1:21 Brisbane 1993) and marathons (PB 2:53 Gold Coast 1985).

Password Fatigue & The Foghat Principle

It has been a while since my last post. I have been making steady progress back to full training and last week built up to 85.6k for the week. So I am not far off now. The right hammie has given me no trouble and I feel confident that it has made a complete recovery. I now will start to up the pace a bit more.

In the mean time my left hip and upper leg have been giving me intermittent problems but never when I am running. I think it is referred pain from my back and it seems worse after lying down or twisting my back like when bowling a cricket ball. As I say it has so far not troubled me at all whilst running. Will be interested to see how it reacts to some more intense efforts.

Here was last weeks sessions.

I was interested to see that Password Fatigue was been officially added to the vernacular.

This noun means the level of frustration caused by having too many different passwords to remember, resulting in an inability to remember even those most commonly used.

At work, I certainly had a lot of different systems and applications that all had passwords which expired at different times leaving me with a whole range of IDs and passwords. It was not uncommon for me to have to enter a password 20 to 30 times a day. I turned this into a goal setting plus by always selecting passwords that directly related to my current running goals. For example, for the last three months of the last year all my passwords pointed to my target of doing 400k in December. Before that they related to the Melbourne Marathon. So every working day I was able to repeatedly reinforce my goals by entering my passwords.

Now that I am on leave, it has left a bit of a hole in my goal setting. So am thinking of putting a password on my home computer just so I get to the same effect.

Does anyone know the Foghat Rule?

Here Comes The Flood

Tues 5th Feb

6.5k 30:41 @ 4:43 HR 153.
Third day in a row of running in the rain now and it was quite heavy. There was another 42 mm in the rain guage this morning. It has now got to the point where even along the cycle path where I have been running that large puddles are becoming permanent features. As well this morning, the creek had risen enough to be 15cm over the top of the path where it crossed the creek. This made for 10 metres of splashing to get across. It took me back to my days in the steeplechase on the track. As it is an out and back course, I had to negotiate this twice and it was certainly deeper on the way back.

That's about as fast as I want to go right now. The leg seems to have held up. Aim now is to start increasing the distance at a slower pace.

Here is another Congolese video. This time a live performance by Bella Bella from the early 80s including some terrific if somewhat badly dressed dancers.

Hippy Hippy Shake

Since my last post, My Wife and I managed to get away for a short break at Caloundra. We went up Wednesday afternoon and came back Friday morning and we had a fantastic time. Got in a couple of swims in the surf, a game of tennis and a few nice walks.

Since then I am slowily cranking up the running again.

Friday 1st Feb
6.5k 32:53 @ 5:03 HR 141. My first run not in the morning since starting leave. Oh I do miss them but will probably continue with the mornings.

Sunday 3rd Feb
11.0k 57:06 @ 5:11 HR 141. Light rain the whole way.

Mon 4th Feb
6.5k 31:47 @ 4:53 HR 144. Steady rain the whole way.

After only having the pleasure of running in the rain once in a blue moon in the last three years, I have had seven rainy runs so far this year. Since Saturday, we have had 180 mm of rain in my rain gauge. I may even get some grass to grow in the backyard now in time for football season.

In my post on my favourite music from last year, I said of the Congolese group Les Quatre Etioles "Sagonini" that It is certainly one for the hips. '
At the time I was searching for some video of the group but couldn't locate any. I still haven't but I have found a clip that certainly expresses what I meant by that statement. Although by a Tanzanian Saida Korali, her music certainly captures all the hypontic qualities of the Congolese style and the video is all hippy hippy shake.
