Robert Song's Running

I'm over 50 and been running off and on since 1968. I have run everything from 800m to 10k on the track, to half marathons (PB 1:21 Brisbane 1993) and marathons (PB 2:53 Gold Coast 1985).

BRRC 14k Champs

On Sunday I did the 14k Champs at the BRRC in a time of 85:15. That is an average pace of 6:06 per K.

When I started back into running in December, my goal was to get fit enough in 2010 to run a marathon again. Assuming Gold Coast as the target I then mapped out a training plan. I also tried to incorporate as many of the BRRC Championship races as possible into the schedule. This 14k always looked like being a tough one coming so early in the schedule. It was made even harder as improvement has been very slow and I had to rest from running for a week when I pulled something in my back whilst on holidays.

The longest run I had done so far was 6.8ks which I did last Wednesday and again on Friday. Still I thought if I just keep it slow I may just be able to make the distance.

Well I did start out slow and slowly got slowier as the race went on. Only trouble was that it was taking more and more out of me to just go slower and slower! In the end I was having to exert at close to my Max Heart Rate just to shuffle along.

So still a long way to go but given only six weeks ago I could only manage 5k in 7:15 pace , 14k at 6:06 looks like a huge improvement.

Great improvement I would say. Like you I am back on the base building and again like you it feels like teh gains are small and come slowly however a gain is a gain. We shoul dalso be pleased to be running at any pace compared to injured and no running.

I think you can chalk that one up as a massive achievement Graham! Glad it's coming together, even if it seems to be slower than you'd like.

Good to see Graham! No mention of a medal this time ;) Nice trajectory of improvement you have going there. I'll guess 5:20 ks for the next race :)

    Yes, Robert Song.

I don't know how this comeback will play out Robert Song. It might be that it will take 6 months of plodding and then suddenly it will all come good.

Still your a better man then most. Most people would of simply given up running and taken up darts or something, not that there is anything wrong with darts ;)
